Day 22: Exhausted (in a good way!)

 Sunday, July 31, 2011

Well, we arrived safely in Orlando, Florida to our wonderful Grandma Joan! We headed straight to our hotel near Universal Studios and after a few failed attempts at feeding ourselves we finally found some lunch at Cici's Pizza. Then we were off to Universal! No rest for the weary! We rode several rides including the Mummy Returns and Jaws, and even got a caricature done of the two of us:

It was a great but exhausting day. Between catching our early morning plane, traveling, coping with a time change, and exploring one of the Universal Studios parks we were beyond tired. We ended up lounging in the hotel and eating cereal for dinner, and I was definitely asleep by 9:30-- the earliest I've been to bed since I was in middle school. It was worth it though, and we needed the rest to gear up for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter the next day!

Day 21: And We're Off!

 Saturday, July 30, 2011

Emily and I will be heading to FLORIDA early tomorrow morning! We are incredibly excited to see our grandma and have some adventures at Universal Studios and the beach!

I usually dislike packing because it makes me very anxious about forgetting something or making everything fit in my suitcase, but this time Everything fits fine, with room to spare. Traveling in the summer is definitely a plus -- shorts and t-shirts don't take up a whole lot of room!

Anyways, I won't be able to continue my blog posts for the next few days, but I will definitely have a picture  (and then some) for each day and will update as soon as I get back. Send us some good traveling vibes; Emily and I are traveling alone by plane and while we have done this before as children this is the first time for us to be navigating the airports by ourselves (no personal flight attendant... darn!).

Day 20: Ahoy Matey!

 Friday, July 29, 2011

Earlier this week a pirate ship made an appearance outside our neighborhood. Yes, you read that correctly, a pirate ship! It's about the size of a large RV, and just in case it wasn't awesome enough, it also serves as a shaved ice stand.

Tonight Emily and I went out to explore the ship -- apparently the rest of our city had the same idea beause it was packed! It looks great, and there are about 20-30 flavors to choose from including "Tiger Blood". We decided not to get one today because the line was huge, but we definitely couldn't pass up this unique photo opportunity! We plan to go back at some point and try to get on top of the ship, but we'll see how that goes.

We found a secluded area of the ship to take pictures! You can't see the masses of people on the other side

We are "scallywags" indeed.

Day 19: Hair

 Thursday, July 28, 2011

Today was another fun day of covering multiple shifts while a coworker takes the week off. Being in the clinic on Tuesdays and Thursdays is like seeing a whole new clinic -- there are tons of kids I've never met just because I don't work on these days. It's fun, but also scary to try to follow the schedule without having any clue what's going on. Most of my coworker's were patient with me while I flubbed a few of my duties and was running behind on a few more. I only have one more day at the clinic before I head back to school! I've been saying a lot of goodbyes to all the kiddos and while it's sad I know it's for the better because me leaving is actually bringing me one step closer to becoming an actual therapist!

Many of you may know that I am currently growing out my hair for Pantene Beautiful Lengths -- a program that creates real-hair wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer and provides them for free. Our hair is part of our identities as women -- can you imagine losing yours on top of facing a life threatening medical crisis like cancer? Pantene Beautiful Lengths and Locks of Love both provide an amazing service to women and girls, and each organization has its pros and cons:

Locks of Love is probably the most well known of the two. This organization will accept a minimum of 10 inches of hair. Unlike Pantene, they will accept hair that has been colored. Also, they do collect shorter hair and sell it to offset the costs of wig production, so every hair counts! I have donated with them in the past and enjoyed the experience. Pantene is a more recent opportunity, with slightly different requirements. They only require a minimum of 8 inches of hair. They do not accept hair that has been colored (it makes matching the hair color to other hair from different sources in the same wig difficult). The website did not mention using or selling shorter or unusable hair to offset wig costs.

Overall, it's not who you donate with, it's just that you do it! I urge you to consider donating your 8-10 inches for cancer. As an added bonus, hairdressers will often cut your hair for free when you donate to these organizations! I am almost where I'd like to be before I cut it all off. Maybe a few more weeks? We will see.

The Miller household apparently does not have rulers... anywhere. So I made one using a ruled hole-punch. I would like my hair to still touch my shoulders after I cut it, so I still have a little ways to go!

Day 18: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

 Wednesday, July 27, 2011

The good:
-- I only have two days left of work!
-- a mere 4 days separates me from Florida and Harry Potter world
-- TCU is only two weeks away

The Bad:
-- Working every day doing a job meant for two people is exhausting
-- It was my last one-on-one tech session with my favorite little girl at work

The Ugly:
-- a swarm of flying insects have invaded my bathroom for reasons I can't determine...aah!

Dad came to the rescue before I could grab a picture (and I was busy being really grossed out!) but here is where we think they got in.

See that tiny little crack? A little boring, yes, but I will take a boring photo of a hole in the wall over a photo of a swarm of creepy bugs any day!

Day 17... In Bed!

 Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Have you ever played that game where you add the words "in bed" to the end of the fortunes you get in fortune cookies? Well today at work for lunch we ended up with an abundance of fortune cookies from Pei Wei. So, being the ridiculously funny and inappropriate group of women that we are (but also very kind, respectful, and professional as well!), we went around the table and read our fortunes out loud and proceeded to spin them into provocative statements. I am glad to know that it doesn't matter how old you are, immaturity is always in style.

My fortune seemed to contain two separate fortunes in one: "Advancement will come with hard work. Many new friends will soon be attracted to your friendly and charming ways" I definitely hope this applies to my life right now, but in between the sheets is fine too I suppose. I will take all the good fortune I can get.

Lucky number 13? Now there's a new one...

Day 16: Babies, Engagements, and Futures, Oh My!

 Monday, July 25, 2011

The more time I spend at the clinic, the less I know what I want to do for the rest of my life. It's always been so clearly Occupational therapy, but this summer physical therapy has been making a comeback! I have all my tech times with physical therapy kids and most of my favorite kids to hang out with are also in physical therapy. Compared to the other disciplines, PT kids are most likely to be able to talk and carry on a conversation, have a sense of humor and actually show a lot of progress. Also, everyone actually knows what physical therapy is. OT... not always the case. It's also even more confusing when it's the physical therapists at my work that always welcome me into their therapy sessions, offer to explain what they're doing and who really seem to appreciate what I do as a tech... aah! Needless to say I will definitely need to do some soul searching in the near future.

Today was a big day in many regards. First, one of my super duper old patients, J, was back at the clinic again for another evaluation after time off from therapy. He had previously suffered a stroke and one side of his body is mostly unusable. He was totally miserable last time I saw him, always screaming in pain and frustration. Now he's talking! And not just talking, but using perfectly complete sentences like "I want to play basketball"... wow! Although his arm and leg are still not quite cooperating, his is much better able to compensate and moves around pretty well! I was so happy for him and it was a great surprise to see him again today.

In other news, yet another one of my coworkers has joined the ranks of pregnant women at my job, bringing the grand total to four! It's been such an ongoing joke about who is next in line for a baby that I almost didn't even believe her, but I'm so incredibly happy for her. Then, later in the afternoon, one of the physical therapists got engaged! We all saw it coming and a few of us were included in the set-up, but needless to say she was shocked and it went over very well. Her fiance was very brave to venture into our building of only females to propose -- haha. There was definitely a lot of screaming and hugs and pictures!

Anyways today's pic is of me and M, an awesome kiddo I only recently met but totally fell in love with. She was put up for adoption and now has the most precious family! M. has the cutest clothes and cracks me up with her ability to understand sarcasm and show this sassy attitude fit for a teenager. She has such a spunky personality that I've spent most of the last few weeks just trying to get her to like me... or at least smile in my presence. I got a glimpse of a smile once, but once I pointed it out and said how happy it made me, she quickly turned it back into the angry glare! Oh well. You win some, you lose some.

Trying so hard to look angry at me... but I know she loves me!

Day 15: Summertime

 Sunday, July 24, 2011

This afternoon I ventured to Colleyville, Texas for a pool party hosted by my friend Tracy! I had a fabulous time catching up with her as well as my other APO buddies. We swam, ate, played pool, talked and generally had a good time. Unfortunately, my camera never made it out of my bag! So instead I will leave you with this:

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good!

It's one of my brand new Harry Potter t-shirts! It came in the mail yesterday and they are wonderful. The other one is a list of all of the spells in the shape of a lighting bolt. Both will definitely be making an appearance at Universal next week!

This week is my last full week of work, and I'm scheduled every day because one of our wonderful office staff is volunteering at Camp John Mark. I'm thankful that I will have the opportunity to spend a few extra days at the clinic hanging out with all the kiddos before I head back to school. I am looking forward to band camp so much!

Day 14: Another Milestone!

 Saturday, July 23, 2011

Two weeks... wow. Time definitely seems to be moving slower the closer I get to moving back to TCU. I'm actually a little shocked that I have been keeping up with my pictures as much as I have. I would really like to focus more on quality now that I feel I have the quantity aspect under control I feel like my posts are unorganized and at times probably a little boring. In the future I hope that spending a little more time on them will improve this! Also, getting back to TCU will definitely help because there is never a dull moment there!

In the meantime, here's today's picture:

I spent most of the day with my mom. We went to the mall and I had a very successful shopping trip. I finally found some tennis shoes that worked for me, and I bought a great new skirt/shirt combination that will be perfect when all my meetings start up again in the fall. When we got home we ate homemade pizza for dinner and then went for a late night swim as a family. Sometimes it still blows my mind that I live somewhere that I can just step out into my backyard and go swimming!

Day 13: Friday, Friday...

 Friday, July 22, 2011

... Gotta get down on Friday! As much as I loathe that song it never gets old :)

Today is indeed Friday, and I had a wonderfully relaxing day. I started the day by the pool with a book, but was easily convinced to join Emily and my dad for a swim (not a hard decision as we are currently in the middle of the 5th longest heat wave ever recorded!). We decided it'd be fun to try to capture each other mid-air in pictures while we jumped into the pool:

Dad was definitely the best cannon-ball-er

I don't really know what I was trying to do here...

Amber loves the pool as well :)
Emily and I then spent the afternoon watching the special features that came with my Harry Potter: The Ultimate Edition DVDs. They were awesome! We still have a whole other disc to tackle another time. Overall today was definitely a great start to what is looking like an excellent weekend.

Day 12: A Taste of TCU

 Thursday, July 21, 2011

Today I visited TCU to speak with someone about a work study position in the music library. It was good to be back on campus, but also a little creepy. It was a ghost town! It didn't quite feel right. I saw only a few lonely summer school students on the sidewalks, "Yo" was deserted and parking lots were (gasp!) empty. Then add into the mix some serious road construction and renovation to several dorms, plus the fact that the Amon G. Carter Stadium is still only a shadow of its former self after implosion six months ago, and it was nearly "Twilight Zone" material! I was so glad to be there but it didn't really feel like home, which was confusing. Luckily when I head back to TCU for real in approximately 2 and a half weeks I won't be the only one! It looks like the people really do make our university what it is. I am so excited to get settled into the apartment with my 3 roommates: Samantha Erica and Lauren. August 10th can't get here fast enough!

On the road to TCU (and stuck in traffic... boo.)

Day 11: A (Mostly) Wordless Wednesday

 Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Joy.

If I had to pick one picture to represent pure joy, it would be this one. L. is a beautiful little girl who was in a car accident that she shouldn't have survived, but she did. Mom was not so lucky. She went from a happy typically developing girl to one trapped by the limitations of her body and seizure-ridden brain, and then she became one of the hardest workers and brightest spirits I've encountered at my work. She is truly an angel. Textbooks say she should have stopped making progress in her recovery a long time ago, and still she continues to amaze us all. She can form sentences, carry on conversations, recite the alphabet, and is slowly regaining the ability to walk, hold crayons, put on clothes, and various other daily activities she once had mastered and that we often take for granted. I am lucky enough to spend at least 45 minutes every Wednesday with this precious little girl helping her legs remember how to walk. It is the best part of my week! She is my angel, one of the many reasons I want to pursue pediatric therapy. We caught this picture mid "cheese!" and it is perfect. It so embodies L's positive attitude and lust for life, and it makes me happy just looking at it!

Work has been a little rough lately and I'm glad I had the opportunity to take a step back and remember all the reasons I love my job!

Day 10: It's the Little Things...

Today was a great day off. For some reason I had it in my head last night that I was supposed to work today, but I was wrong! So, when my alarm went off I went back to sleep... and then slept until noon, a full 12 hours. I'm not sure why I slept that much but I guess my body needed it, and now I feel great! I had a boring but productive day. I worked on my graduate school applications, did 45 minutes on the elliptical machine, and did all my laundry. I couldn't think of a good picture for today, so I took one of my closet. This is the first time in a long time that literally all of my clothes have been clean and put away at one time. I always have the best intentions, but usually just end up pulling clean clothes right out of the laundry basket that I carried them back to my room in., or living off a pile on the floor.

I also spent part of the day solidifying our Florida trip plans! Emily and I are extremely excited to visit our grandma Joan and travel to various attractions nearby. Some of our plans include 2 days at Universal Studios (This includes the Harry Potter theme park!), a trip to Cocoa Beach, and getting to play tourist in her home town, Ocala. We leave on the 31st and once I'm back it's basically time to pack up and head back to TCU! This summer has definitely flown by!

Day 9: The Ultimate 11:11 Wish

 Monday, July 18, 2011

Alright I admit it, I'm one of those silly people that makes wishes when the clock hits 11:11. I don't know when or why I started to do this, but old habits die hard. Or whatever that saying is. So, obviously, when I spent this morning at work syncing some digital clocks to some kind of satellite device and they all magically hit 11:11 at the same time, it made me happy. I think the all of the extra 11s will surely make my wishes come true... or at least I will keep telling myself that.

Day 8: Time for some Introspection...

 Sunday, July 17, 2011

I've been doing a lot of blog-hopping lately trying to see how others my age run their blogs. I came across a lot of "about me" type posts and was inspired to do one myself.

1. I love to make lists
2. I have recently taken an interest in painting
3. I prefer to wake up early and take my time getting ready in the morning. I could be up and ready to go in 15-20 minutes, but prefer to take at least an hour.
4. I have an intense weakness for chocolate, and will work out extra just so I can eat it.
5. I have never tasted soda, and no, you will not be the one that gets me to try it.
6. I used to drink juice, but stopped in elementary school, now all I drink is milk and water
7. I am the queen of to-do lists, and will write things down even after I've completed them just so I can cross them off
8. I think a lot about money, but know how to spend when I need to and save when I need to
9. I'm often terrible about answering voicemail and text messages, and it's not because I don't care about the person or answering them, I just don't call or text if I don't have anything interesting to say.
10. I own 5 pairs of TOMS shoes
11. I am ridiculously blind without my contacts
12. I could watch Law & Order SVU all day, and have done so many times!
13. I can't stand the idea of letting someone down or failing at anything
14. I like to take pictures, a lot.
15. I am a Sagittarius, but I don't feel I fit most of the general description of people with this sign.
16. I thrive in situations where I have too much on my plate. It's a fine line that I have enjoyed pushing while in college. I am a habitual multi-tasker.
17. I have donated my hair to locks of love, and am working on a second donation right now
18. When I was in 4th grade, I was in an organization called Odyssey of the Mind, which is basically a team creativity and problem solving competition. My team won first place in our region, state, and world competitions! I used to think that this was the highlight of my life and that I would never accomplish anything cool again.
19. I was in at least one choir for 8 years

20. I joined color guard my freshman year of college and it has completely changed what I thought my experience at TCU would be like for the better
21. I have never completely dropped a flag or rifle during a game or performance, although I have messed up or caught something wrong plenty of times, or just not thrown it in the first place if it was too windy.
22. Even though I've never had any huge embarrassing moments, I still freak out every time we march onto the field.
23. I used to be very good at ice skating. I haven't been in a few years, so who knows if I held on to any of that talent
24. Sometimes I wish I was really good at something instead of just being okay a lot of different things
25. I started wearing glasses in the 4th grade, but after I got braces at the same time my parents took pity on me and let me get contacts
26. I have one younger sister, Emily, who is awesome
27. I feel lucky that I mostly get along with my parents and that they get along with each other
28. I love kids, but the thought of having my own terrifies me
29. I am easily bored by food, but at the same time I often get stuck in a routine
30. I right with my right hand, but am better at bowling and other random activities with my left hand
31. I am terrible at public speaking
32. I'm an introvert, but not necessarily shy. It just drains my energy to spend time with large groups of  people and do things like go to parties and clubs.
33. Small talk is the bane of my existence. I hate it.
34. I don't have a lot of close friends, but I like it that way and am very loyal to the ones I have
35. Middle school and college will be the only times I stayed at the same school all the way through
36. I've lived in Illinois, North Carolina, and Texas
37. I want to go to graduate school to become an Occupational Therapist

43. I love horror films, but I haven't seen a lot of them
44. I'm in a sorority, Alpha Delta Pi. Most of the time I love it, but I hate when people assume sorority girls are all stupid and sleep around, because this isn't true of me or most other women in Greek organizations.
45. My pet peeve is people getting things they don't deserve.
46. I'm obsessed with Glee, even though it's cheesy.
47. My music tastes are very eclectic. I like every genre except rap and country
48. My favorite bands are the Sick Puppies and Rise Against
49. I LOVE music from the 80s and 90s. Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong era
50. I have never cried because of a movie until I saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. I cried in the theaters both times I saw it.
51. If I could afford laser hair removal, i would totally do it
52. I love Sign Language and teaching myself new signs
53. I consider myself agnostic. A lot of people don't really understand what that means. The way I understand it, I believe that there is something bigger than us, but that we as humans can't possibly describe it.
54. I worked as a camp counselor at Camp Balcones Springs, and it changed my life!
55. While there, I became a certified ropes course facilitator, something I'm very proud of
56. I think make up is really fun, and I wish I was more skilled at applying it (especially eye shadow!)

71. I can't blow bubbles with bubble gum or whistle.
72. I used to be really self conscious about my height, so I slouched a lot. This led to back problems
73. I cannot walk in heels
74. I really like to bake
75. I have never been to a funeral even though people close to me have died
76. I learned to read really early in life. My mom has the video footage to prove it.
77. I love to watch documentaries
78. I was in a performance of the Vagina Monologues, and it completely changed my idea of who I am as a person
79. Since then, I've taken an even greater interest in women's rights and activism
80. I haven't thrown up since I was 2 or 3 years old. It's my greatest phobia.
81. A few years ago I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and put on an anti-anxiety medication. This year I decided to take back my life and weaned myself off of the drugs. I have not had a panic attack since then, and for the most part I feel great!
82. There are still a few leftover anxieties in my life. One of them is when I'm driving, I imagine what would happen if I was hit by a certain car I see, or if I lost control and flipped over I imagine how I will escape my car.
83. The other is that I often have dreams where people I care deeply about are dying and I can't do anything about it
84. I can sleep through almost anything, except intelligible words. Then I have to eavesdrop.
85. I've never been in a car accident or pulled over by police
86. I was traumatized as a child when my pet gerbil had babies with my sister's gerbil, and then started to eat the babies. I can't erase the image of little dead bloody hamsters from my memory... gross! Luckily one baby survived and I got to keep it.
87. I can play Dance Dance Revolution on Expert level on most songs
88. I took Latin in high school, and remember nothing about the language.
89. I am directionally challenged... I will get lost going to and from places I've been to before.
90. I have a terrible auditory memory. I can't follow when people spell words out loud or tell me directions, or someone's phone number. I need it written down.
91. I am currently a therapy technician at Our Children's House at Baylor, and I love my job (most of the time!)
92. I have a hard time just being. I always feel like I have to be doing something and accomplishing something
93. I almost always will read the book before I see the movie, even though this usually results in me liking the movie less.
94. I don't like taking baths, they gross me out. If I do, I'll take a shower afterwards and then feel bad about myself for wasting so much water.
95. Pizza is my favorite food. I love it.
96. I'm a pretty passive person, confrontation makes me uncomfortable.
97. I have become more afraid of flying the older I've gotten. I used to not care, now it kinda freaks me out.
98. Same with roller coasters. I can't handle upside down!
99. I'm a procrastinator
100. I'm incredibly ticklish, and it's a problem haha.

Wow! You survived the entire list! I hope you learned something interesting about me that you didn't already know. Unfortunately the only reward I have for you is today's photo:

My recent rekindled love of Harry Potter continues-- I spent most of the day re-reading the first Harry Potter book. This is the first page of the first chapter, fittingly called "The Boy Who Lived". Even though I've read this book a dozen times, it never gets old, and today was a wonderfully relaxing day!

Day 7: One Week Later...

 Saturday, July 16, 2011

Well, I made it a full week! Honestly, it feels like it has been a lifetime. I'm proud that I stuck with it, even though some days were rather boring and I wasn't sure I'd be able to come up with something worthwhile to post here. I think I might actually be able to turn this into a habit!

Today has been a great, relaxing day. I spent the afternoon re-reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in my swimsuit out by the pool. Then, me and my family went to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 in the theaters -- Emily and I's second time, but my parents' first. A couple weeks ago when I was talking to my mom and she said something along the lines of "I wonder what happens!" and Emily and I just laughed at her because, well, it's a book that most people have already read! We KNOW what happens! We have been poking fun at her ever since. I definitely cried again, even though I had seen it already. It's simply a gorgeous movie, end of story.

I also watched a movie called "Arthur" which has Russel Brand in it. Hilarious! It's not like other comedies where it's got a few funny parts here and there -- literally everything out of that man's mouth is pure comedy genius.  Definitely two thumbs up from me.

I couldn't think of a good one-week celebratory picture, hilarity ensued

Day 6: Mischief Managed

 Friday, July 15, 2011

Today (yes, I'm counting it as "today" because the movie started at midnight) I went to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 at what was my last ever Harry Potter midnight showing. My sister Emily and I started seeing these midnight showings years ago and it's become a great tradition -- we order our tickets in advance, get all dressed up in our Harry Potter gear, wait for what feels like days, and then spend a few magical hours soaking in the latest instalment of the wonderful Harry Potter series.

This year went exceptionally smoothly. We arrived at the theater around 7:30 because we were anticipating a huge crowd. We were right. There were at least a hundred people camped out already... literally. It was still light outside and VERY hot, so many people planned ahead and brought tents with them. Texas has been experiencing record high temperatures and tonight was no exception. It was at least 90 degrees! Luckily, we only spent about one hour outside as we were let into the theaters early so we could wait the remaining hours in the comfort of air conditioning. Everything was so much more organized than last year. It was easy to find the line for our 12:04 showing, the lines were kept separate and monitored for cutting etc. When it was time to go into the theater, only one line was allowed to go in at a time, unlike last year where it turned into a full blown dangerous stampede with people running into the building to snag their seats. Good job Cinemark for making it such a great experience!

I don't have much to say about the movie, only that it was pretty close to how I imagined it and that's all I could ask for. It was great. I actually teared up at multiple points, which is a first for me. I hardly ever let myself get that invested in a fictional character. If you haven't seen it yet, you'll know what I mean when you see it. Something that really struck me is a scene involving Dumbledore and Harry. Dumbledore was killed in book 6: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but he is able to speak with Harry at one point during the film. It's a really meaningful and uplifting conversation, and at the end Harry asks if their conversation is indeed real or if he's only imagining it. Dumbledore responds by saying "Of course it's happening inside your head Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?" This was the quote of the evening for me, and sums up my entire history with Harry Potter, which by the way has spanned over half my life. Sure these stories are just that, stories, but does that mean they can't have application in real life? The Harry Potter books had a huge impact on my life, especially the character of Hermione.

Hermione was the perfect role model for my socially awkward 4th grade self. She taught me that women can be admired and respected for their brains, not just beauty, that no one should ever apologize for or hide their intelligence. I should find something I'm passionate about and stand up for it, and how to truly be a loyal friend to everyone, even people I don't particularly like. Basically, she taught me and millions of other girls across the world that women kick butt! The books may be over, but the message hasn't changed, and yes it most certainly was real.

Day 5: I Solomnly Swear That I am Up to No Good

 Thursday, July 14, 2011

Today is a short post because Emily and I are off to see the wizard! Harry Potter, that is. This is the last midnight showing of Harry Potter and pretty much the end of my childhood. I painted my fingernails Harry Potter themed to commemorate the day. It's hard to tell but one of my thumbs is a lightning bolt, the other is the Deathly Hallows symbol, and the other 4 fingers on each hand have the house crests glued onto them and coated in clear nailpolish. They are "wicked". Off to go sit in line for 4 hours!

Day 4: The Fun Continues

 Wednesday, July 13, 2011

Meet Kimberly. She is a sassy little 11 year old girl that I see at the clinic on Wednesdays. This photo is proof that even after three days the humor of the temporary AC units has not gotten old. From battling robots and glamor shots to blasting cold air in each other's faces, the kids adore these things. I love where I work because my childish behavior is totally appropriate... we are a match made in heaven! When you chase kids around all day every day you can't help but be a child at heart.

I have known Kimberly since I started working at Our Children's House a few years ago, and she is honestly one of my favorites. She has this attitude and sense of humor well beyond her years and brightens my day with her spirit. Kim has made an incredible amount of progress (she's on the verge of walking on her own after being in a wheelchair for years!) and I'm so thankful to be a part of her treatment because she is one inspiring young lady :)

Day 3: A Day of Relaxing

 Tuesday, July 12, 2011

Today was mostly uneventful, but in a good way. I don't work on Tuesdays or Thursdays, so today was devoted to catching up on sleep and studying for the GRE. I took another full practice test and got a 1400... hopefully I will be able to repeat this on test day!

I am SO looking forward to the final Harry Potter movie on Thursday night. In preparation, my sister Emily and I watched the 6th movie tonight (see pic below!) We will be attending the midnight showing complete with costumes. I'm glad I was able to schedule my GRE so that I'd be able to attend! I am really excited, but also a little sad. Harry Potter has been a part of my life for 13 years -- that's over half of my life! First I had to let go of no longer pre-ordering my Harry Potter books and staying up 24 hours straight after receiving it reading because I could not put it down. Now the end of the movie series is just another indication that I'm supposed to be an adult soon. I literally grew up with these characters; In each book Harry and his friends were always the same age as me. I don't cry easily, but I'm probably going to tear up a little when the credits start rolling. Regardless, I'm sure it will be an epic night!

About to watch Harry Potter, complete with popcorn and a TCU Snuggie!

Day 2: Attack of the Cool-a-Tron

 Monday, July 11, 2011

So for the past several weeks at work, something has been a little off with our air conditioning. Some rooms are freezing, while others reach nearly 90 degrees by mid afternoon despite multiple fans and other efforts to cool them down. It's been rough, especially when your job is to run around being energetic and motivating to young kids! To make matters worse, we currently have three pregnant women who are feeling miserable enough as it is. Unfortunately, replacing our faulty AC unit will cost over ten grand, so as a temporary fix three large portable air conditioning systems were installed in our clinic today. They suck warm air from the ceiling, cool it, and shoot it out of these awkward flexible tubes. Much fun and hilarity ensued:

As you can see, they look like giant robots! "Danger Will Robinson" anyone? We named the one in the Speech office the Cool-a-Tron ("Coolio" for short) and fitted him with his very own Transformers helmet. My coworkers and I spent a good 10-15 minutes taking pictures with it. Even though these things were bulky and loud, and they caused several power outages throughout the day, it was totally worth it.

After work I ventured to Gloria's for a friend and coworker's birthday celebration. Happy Birthday Renalie! I am thrilled to have been a part of your special day :) Great food and spending time with these lovely ladies was a great way to end the day.

Day 1: The Dreaded First Post

 Sunday, July 10, 2011

Welcome! Today will go down in blog history as the day I defeated the daunting blank white text box! Blogging is much more difficult than it looks. Honestly, I created and designed A Horned Frog Blog several weeks ago when the boredom of summer was finally kicking in, but I wanted to save my first post for when I could think of the right thing to say. If you haven't heard, the purpose of this blog is for me to post one photo every day for an entire year. This is a personal project I have considered launching for a while, but the timing wasn't right... until now.

So, what's so special about July 10th? Nothing really. It's exactly 4 days before I take the GRE, and 5 days, before the final instalment of Harry Potter is released in theaters. In 21 days I will be on a plane to visit my grandma in Florida, and in just one month I will move back to Fort Worth and into the Tom Brown apartments for the school year. In a year, I will hopefully be packing up my things and leaving the DFW area for the glamorous life of a graduate student. Needless to say I have a lot planned and high expectations for the next 364 days. There's no time like the present, right?

So, to commemorate this momentous occasion, I will leave you with this:

Nothing exciting, but such was my day. Studying, studying, and more studying. Hopefully my hard work will pay off!
